# Jellyfin

> Your own media server for films, shows and music, with the admin account made for you.

On Ubuntu and Debian we run Jellyfin's own install script, checked against its published SHA-256, which adds Jellyfin's apt repository. On the Red Hat family, where Jellyfin recommends containers, we run its jellyfin/jellyfin image. The setup wizard is completed through Jellyfin's API with a generated admin password in /root/jellyfin-admin.txt, and /srv/media is ready for your files.

## Details

- Installs on: Ubuntu and Debian; AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Fedora
- Smallest plan: Standard (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM)
- Public ports: 8096/tcp, 80/tcp, 443/tcp
- Project site: https://jellyfin.org/

## After the server is ready

1. Run `cat /root/jellyfin-admin.txt` for the admin password, open `http://<your IPv4>:8096` and log in as admin.
2. Upload media to /srv/media with `rsync` or `scp`, then add a library for it in Dashboard, Libraries (the folder is /media inside Jellyfin on AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Fedora).
3. For HTTPS, point a domain at the server, allow ports 80 and 443 in the panel firewall and run `vps9-https media.example.com`.
4. Create a user for each person who watches instead of sharing the admin login.

## Questions

### Can a VPS transcode video for Jellyfin?

Only slowly. Our servers have no GPU, and Jellyfin's own hardware guide says a server without one isn't recommended for transcoding: HEVC, AV1 and HDR tone mapping need a GPU, and converting even one stream in software can take all of the CPU. Use apps that can play your files directly, or keep copies in a widely supported format such as H.264.

### How do I get my media onto the server?

Copy it over SSH: `rsync -avP ~/Movies/ root@<your IPv4>:/srv/media/Movies/` from your computer, then add /srv/media as a library. rsync resumes if the connection drops, which matters for large files.

### Is streaming my media from a VPS allowed?

Streaming files you have the right to use, for yourself and your household, is what Jellyfin is for. Sharing copyrighted material you have no rights to breaks our [acceptable use policy](https://vpsnine.com/aup) and gets servers suspended.

## Order it

Pick Jellyfin in the order form, or use `"app": "jellyfin"` in the API or `vps9 servers create --app jellyfin`. See [all one-click apps](https://vpsnine.com/apps) and [plans](https://vpsnine.com/plans).
