# Restore a deleted server

> A server you delete stays in the recycle bin for 7 days with its disk and IP addresses. Restore it from there, or delete it forever now.

When you delete a server, it isn't wiped straight away: it goes to the **recycle bin** for 7 days. Its disk is kept exactly as it was, and its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses stay reserved for it. Within those 7 days you can restore it; after that the disk is wiped for good and the addresses are released.

## What happens when you delete

1. The server is stopped and removed from the host, but its disk is kept on the host.
2. Billing for it stops at once, as for any delete.
3. It leaves your servers page and shows in the **recycle bin** (a link at the bottom of the servers page, or `/recycle-bin`), with the time left before it is wiped.

[Screenshot: The recycle bin with one deleted server, its addresses and the time left] Each deleted server shows when its disk is wiped, and its addresses, reserved for it until then.

Only servers you delete yourself go to the bin. A server deleted because a renewal stayed unpaid, one cancelled at the end of its period, one refunded under the money-back guarantee, and one removed for abuse are wiped at once.

## Restore it

In the recycle bin, choose **Restore…**. Restoring is an order for a new billing period of the same plan, and the add-ons the server had, at today's prices:

- pick monthly or yearly,
- your [account credit](https://vpsnine.com/help/account-credit-and-invoices) pays it first,
- pay the rest like any invoice (Bitcoin or PayPal).

Once it is paid, the server boots again from its own disk with the same addresses, and its billing starts from that day. The days it spent in the bin aren't billed.

[Screenshot: The restore page with the monthly and yearly price] Restoring is a new billing period: credit pays it first.

Pay before the disk is wiped: an invoice paid after that can't bring the server back, and its amount becomes account credit.

From the command line or the API:

```bash
vps9 bin ls
vps9 bin restore old-blog              # prints the invoice and where to pay it
curl -X POST -H "Authorization: Bearer $VPS9_TOKEN" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"term":"month"}' https://my.vpsnine.com/api/v1/recycle-bin/srv_…/restore
```

## Delete it forever now

If you don't want to wait 7 days, choose **Delete forever…** and type the hostname to confirm. The disk is wiped now and the addresses are released. This can't be undone.

```bash
vps9 bin rm old-blog --yes
```

## Before you rely on it

The recycle bin is a safety net for a wrong click, not a backup. Keep your own [backups](https://vpsnine.com/help/backups-you-should-run), and turn on [deletion protection](https://vpsnine.com/help/protect-a-server-from-deletion) for the servers that matter most: then they can't be deleted by mistake in the first place.
